“Imagine never doing anything athletic just because you think you won't make it to the Olympics.
That's most people's relationship to making art.”
2 months ago, I posted this on Facebook:
Extroversion is a skill.
Introversion isn’t an excuse to avoid learning to use social media.
Unfortunately, I got a response I wasn’t initially fond of:

I thought, “what a ‘short’ response.” (Not just in length.)
I took it as “unwilling to discuss.” “My way or the highway.”
(You can’t control the story people tell themselves about you.)
But… I’ve seen his writing before, like his newsletter!
I look over all followers I’m notified about, and… honestly?
Decent author! He’s inspired me to take writing sprints seriously.
Regardless, I’m not proud of how I reacted:

My response wasn’t great. However, when I got the notification he responded?
I thought, “I hope it’s not like his last response.”
It wasn’t.
This time, he clarified.

Seek to understand, not to be understood.
One of my favorite lessons. It emphasizes the need for empathy.
If I’m faced with a viewpoint or worldview I don’t agree with or understand, I try to.
I’ll ask them questions, and become a student to their teachings. A student to the lessons of life.

It also pairs well with,
Sometimes, we don’t need to be taught.
We need to be reminded.
Except…. I… DID NOT try and understand with my response.
Instead, I told a story.
(tried to be understood, listening to respond, not listening to understand)
I used experience. It’s irrefutable, yet, I was hoping it’d resonate with him:
Above, is an edited version of my response with a tie in to art and writing.
Below, is just my raw response.

It inspired a story about me and my GF’s experience with art!
I initially wanted this entry to be a collection of stories that address what I call: a Limiter Removal.
A limiter removal = An awakening, an unlockIt would’ve been about other awakenings I’ve resonated with or had.
But, my response to H.J. inspired a video I’ve wanted to make for months.
It was the perfect opportunity, since I’ve also been writing about authenticity in my newsletters.
Here’s one more story featuring an “awakening” that resonated with me.

This connects with what I’m hearing a lot of entrepreneurs in the space say:
“Stop waiting! Go fast. Fail fast. Learn fast. But whatever you do, do it fast.”
Grant Cardone and Daniel Priestley echo in my head, Alex Hormozi too.

Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn Founder
There’s this sense of “iteration on the fly,” but also,
“Creating something to have something to iterate on the fly.”
What am I focusing on?
